Why are my dog's paws stained red? For as long as I can remember, my dog has had a habit of licking his paws. He licks them so much that they are stained a reddish pink color. The veterinarian told me he has a food allergy so I switched him over from IAMS (crappy food, I know!) to California Natural, a hypoallergenic food with a limited ingredient list meant for dogs with allergies. After a couple of months with no change I switched his food again, but this time to something grain free. Unfortunately he is STILL licking his paws! Is it possible his paw licking isn't allergy related and is just something he does out of boredom?
Usually that licking is from an allergy. Mine would lick the tops of their paws. I switched to a food that has no wheat, corn, or soy. It took a while before they stopped licking. It was a couple of weeks I think.
It could be an allergy to chicken. Most foods these days have chicken in them. Whatever meat your's has, switch to a different one. Lamb and rice is said to be good for dogs with allergies.
