my pet rat has sores on the skin, why?
I have a male albino rat as a pet and has developed a kind of skin problems. He scratches all the time which led to many injuries and skin lesions. What could be causing this problem and how Can I solve this problem? Thank you in advance for any help.
Incidentally, I have a male rat (with cap) having the same problem. What I found to work well is to ensure that their cage is kept clean, try to get him out of his cage during the day, take it with you (that help if the scratch is due to boredom). Each time you clean its cage, I also bathroom with original Dawn soap (which helps remove excess sebum, which can also cause itching.) usually heal wounds shortly after your bath, which occur again 2-3 weeks later. So, put another bathroom. Put some Neosporin on the cuts, if it appears to be very bad. Definitely I checked for skin mites, as is often not seen with the naked eye, and sometimes you lose, not even a scratch on the skin. A veterinarian can provide medicines for skin mites, which'll get rid of them if it happens to be the problem.
